Louise Andrews Kent (1886-1969) was a multifaceted American writer whose body of work spanned children’s literature, newspaper columns, and beloved New England cookbooks.
Born in Brookline, Massachusetts, Kent’s intellectual curiosity was evident early on. She excelled at Simmons College School of Library Science, graduating in 1909 as senior class president and editor of the college paper.
Kent’s writing career was marked by its versatility. Her early work included a newspaper column entitled “Theresa’s Tea Table” in the Boston Traveller, written under the pen name Theresa Tempest.
Her passion for food led her to adopt the delightful pseudonym “Mrs. Appleyard,” under which she authored a popular series of cookbooks celebrating traditional Vermont recipes. Kent also contributed a regular food feature to Vermont Life magazine.
Louise Andrews Kent passed away in 1969, leaving behind an enduring literary legacy.
